Gastrointestinal Pathology
Gastrointestinal pathology — including gastrointestinal tract, liver, biliary tract (ampulla-biliary tract and gallbladder) and pancreas — is a recognized sub-specialty discipline of surgical pathology. The GI pathology service in surgical pathology provides comprehensive diagnostic expertise and services for the full range of gastrointestinal/liver/pancreas diseases, which deals with the diagnosis and characterization of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases with special emphasis on chronic inflammatory diseases and tumors in the GI tract, pancreas and liver. The service provides expert diagnostic interpretation of in-house cases for Northwestern Memorial Hospital and national and international consultations. GI pathology service provides daily educational activities to residents and fellows as well as medical students.
Education
Gastrointestinal pathology offers a one-year specialized training fellowship (non-ACGME accredited) in diagnostic gastrointestinal, liver and pancreaticobiliary pathology, including evaluation of biopsies, resection specimens and consult material. Pathology residents are fully involved in GI pathology service during their rotation in surgical pathology to learn the diagnostic GI pathology in both biopsy and surgical resected specimens. GI pathologists are fully involved with teaching medical students, including lectures in the GI disease modules as well as supervising them on elective GI pathology rotations. Faculty hold medical liver conferences and tumor boards with GI oncology weekly; conferences in hepatology, endoscopy and inflammatory bowel disease are held monthly.
